This wasn’t the kind of virality girl group GirlTrends member Erin Ocampo was hoping when she made a joke in ABS-CBN’s It’s Showtime.

Ocampo’s joke quickly went viral after netizens and groups, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development which described it as discriminatory.

In one of the segment of It’s Showtime where talents exchange supposedly funny banters, Ocampo asked Hashtag member Jimboy Martin “Paano gumawa ng panget na anak (How do you make an ugly child)?”

To which he answered “Bakit hindi mo ‘tanong sa nanay mo (Why don’t you ask your mom)?”

Ocampo replied, “Mali. ‘Tanong mo sa totoo mong magulang kasi ampon ka (Wrong. Ask your real parents because you’re adopted).”

The show lead by host Amy Perez then apologized publicly after the backlash.

“Ang buong programa po ay humihingi ng inyong paumanhin, at hindi po namin intensiyon na mawalan ng respeto at gawin katawa-tawa ang kahit na sinong tao,” said Perez.

DSWD Acting Secretary Virginia Orogo said that the words “ampon ka” is discriminatory and has a negative connotation, even if it was used as a part of a joke.
